Stop the Room, I Want to Get Off

I'd love to write a witty, thought-provoking post today, but my head is spinning.

No, I'm not hung over. I'm just feeling the after-effects of last night's dance class.

See, we worked on turns. And in my younger dance days, I could turn with the best of 'em. I was the kid who used to cartwheel down the aisles of the grocery store. But last night, I got to feel the full effect that aging has had on me; well, maybe it wasn't so much age as being out of practice.

We lined up at the corner to take our turn. I got into position, found my spot and began to rotate. As I picked up speed, it got harder and harder to hold onto my spot, leaving me dizzy, stumbling and feeling like I was going to lose my lunch by the time I got to the opposite corner.

Really, if I'm going to feel like that, I like to down a few margaritas first.

"Jump up and down," called Debbie, my instructor. "It'll help the dizziness."

Umm, not really. Jumping up and down while the room is spinning pretty much guarantees more nausea. Instead, I walked out of the studio, leaned against the wall and prayed for the room to stop moving. When I'd composed myself, I headed back in for another set. Let's just say that by the time we were finished with turns, I no longer cared about form, speed or graceful elegance. All I cared about was not throwing up in front of a room full of people I'm just getting to know.

A little Web research this morning tells me that my balance and spotting ability will return with practice. So if you see me out spinning somewhere, I'm not crazy. Just practicing.

My sympathies. I get dizzy when film and TV people do those spinning camera shots.

I remember as a kid that spinning and spinning until I was dizzy and close to throwing up seemed like FUN.

Now? Not so much. Glad you have more sense of adventure!

I feel the same way, Roxanne. I hate those "roller coaster" shots where you actually feel like you're going up and down hills, too.

Crabby, so many things that seemed fun as a kid have lost their appeal these days ;-).

*clings to the belief that these abilities return*
